Conditions that Respond Well to Chiropractic in Snohomish
Asthma
The article below indicates there are people with asthma who can benefit from chiropractic care in Snohomish:
Manual Therapy for Childhood Respiratory Disease: A Systematic Review
J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 2013 (Jan); 36 (1): 57–65
Vanessa Carina Pepino, José Dirceu Ribeiro, PhD, Maria Angela Gonçalves de Oliveira Ribeiro, PhD, Marcos de Noronha, PhD, Maria Aparecida Mezzacappa, PhD, Camila Isabel Santos Schivinski, PhD
https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(12)00266-7/abstract
Conclusion: The use of manual techniques on children with respiratory diseases seems to be beneficial. Chiropractic, osteopathic medicine, and massage are the most common interventions. The lack of standardized procedures and the limited variety of methods used evidenced the need for more studies on the subject.
Attention Deficit Disorder
It is not very well known, but many studies have shown that chiropractic can help children suffering from ADHD. Here is an example.
The chiropractic care of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a retrospective case series.
International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, 327 N. Middletown Road, Media, PA 19063, USA

PMID: 20451152 DOI: 10.1016/j.explore.2010.02.001
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20451152
Conclusion: A retrospective case series of ADHD patients under chiropractic care is described. This provides supporting evidence on the benefits of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy. We encourage further research in this area.
Autism
There are direct links between proper joint movement and healthy brain function. They are related through neurology. Read on for more information.
Research from the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health
Chiropractic reporting on improvement in a 3-year-old with Pervasive Developmental Disorder reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in managing children with such disorders.
“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system, and the brain” stated Dr. Morgan Handt, the author of the paper. “Basic science research shows that the proper development of the brain relies heavily on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age.”
Research has shown not only that the developing brain relies on normal structural integrity and joint movement, but that complex neurochemical communication and pathways involved in helping humans to “feel good” are tied into spinal biomechanics and their related neurological pathways.
Bell’s Palsy
Below is a case study showing how chiropractic care can help those who suffer from Bell’s Palsy, also known as facial nerve paralysis.
Chiropractic care of a patient with the vertebral subluxation and Bell’s palsy

J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2003;26:4-253
Conclusion: There are indications that patients suffering from Bell’s palsy may benefit from a holistic chiropractic approach that not only includes a focus of examination and care of the primary regional areas of complaint (eg, face, TMJ) but also potentially from significant vertebral subluxation concomitants.
Blindness/Visual Disorders
There has been evidence to show chiropractic can support healthy vision. This is especially true for those who have issues with glaucoma.

https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(00)99220-0/abstract
J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2000;23:428–34
Conclusion: Recovery of vision in this patient was an unexpected and remarkable outcome, raising the question of whether chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy may be of value in the management of glaucomatous visual field loss. More intensive research is required.
Blood Pressure
I have had several patients whose blood pressure normalized through the course of their chiropractic treatment.
Effects of Upper and Lower Cervical Spinal Manipulative Therapy on Blood Pressure
J Chiropr Med. 2015 Mar; 14(1): 1–9. Published online 2015 Feb 7. doi: 10.1016/j.jcm.2014.12.005

Conclusion: Upper cervical SMT enhances dominance of parasympathetic and lower cervical SMT enhances dominance of sympathetic activity in this young volunteer group. However, the dominance of parasympathetic activity was found in patients with neck pain that received both upper and lower cervical SMT.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
There is a multitude of evidence showing the effectiveness of chiropractic on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Autonomic dysfunction in idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome Verghese J, Galanopoulou AS, Herskovitz S, Muscle Nerve 2000 Aug;23(8):1209-13
This is the study of 76 patients with CTS (in 139 limbs). Autonomic symptoms were reported in 76 limbs (47 patients). Of these, 59% consisted of swelling of the fingers, 39% dry palms, 33% Raynaud’s phenomenon, and 32% blanching of the hand. Sympathetic skin response (SSR) had a sensitivity/specificity ratio of 34/89% in CTS with autonomic symptoms. The presence of autonomic disturbances was significantly associated with the female gender but not age, duration of disease, or clinical severity in a binary logistic regression model.
It appears that autonomic disturbances are common (55%) in CTS, occurring with increasing severity of electrophysiologic findings.
Conservative chiropractic care of cervicobrachialgia Glick DM, Chiropr Res J, 1989; 1(3):49-52 Cervicobrachialgia, also known as “brachial neuritis” or “brachial neuralgia” involves neck and arm pain that can be described as “sharp,” “stabbing,” or “aching,” with acute sudden onset. The pain is in the shoulder blade, the side of the neck, and may continue through the upper arm.
This study showed that chiropractic was as effective as medical treatment in reducing symptoms of CTS. Chiropractic care included spinal adjustments, and in addition, ultrasound over the carpal tunnel and the use of nighttime wrist supports. Clinical commentary: pathogenesis of cumulative trauma disorders. MacKinnon S. Journal of Hand Surgery, Sept. 1994, 873-883.
Chronic Neck Pain
It comes as no surprise that chiropractic is one of the leaders in helping with chronic neck pain.
Chronic spinal pain: a randomized clinical trial comparing medication, acupuncture, and spinal manipulation.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12865832
Conclusion: The consistency of the results provides evidence that in patients with chronic spinal pain, manipulation, if not contraindicated, results in greater short-term improvement than acupuncture or medication.
Colic
I have had several infants whose colic symptoms subsided with pediatric chiropractic care.

https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(12)00161-3/abstract
Conclusion: In patients with chronic spinal pain syndromes, spinal manipulation, if not contraindicated, maybe the only treatment modality of the assessed regimens that provides broad and significant long-term benefit.
Degenerative Joint Disease
Again, it comes as no surprise that chiropractors help restore healthy joint function. DJD is just one of many such conditions.

Research has also shown chiropractic to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used by chiropractors.
Disc Herniation
Disc herniation is one of my specialties. In fact, the VA now recommends chiropractic care to just about every surgical candidate. As a result, they have seen a 50% drop in the need for spinal surgery.
A large percentage of acute and importantly chronic lumbar disc herniation patients treated with chiropractic spinal manipulation reported clinically relevant improvement.

Conclusion: Chiropractic care may represent a nonpharmaceutical health care approach for pediatric epileptic patients. Current evidence suggests that correction of the upper cervical vertebral subluxation complex might be most beneficial. It is suggested that chiropractic care be further investigated regarding its role in the overall health care management of pediatric epileptic patients.
Female Issues
This research article explains the mechanism by which chiropractic can help with Women’s Health issues, another specialty in my practice.
Somatic dysfunction and the phenomenon of visceral disease simulation: a probable explanation for the apparent effectiveness of somatic therapy in patients presumed to be suffering from the true visceral disease.
J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1995 (Jul); 18 (6): 379–397
Nansel D, Szlazak M.
Conclusion: The proper differential diagnosis of somatic vs. visceral dysfunction represents a challenge for both the medical and chiropractic physician. The afferent convergence mechanisms, which can create signs and symptoms that are virtually indistinguishable with respect to their somatic vs. visceral etiologies, need to be appreciated by all portal-of-entry health care providers, to insure timely referral of patients to the health specialist appropriate to their condition. Furthermore, it is not unreasonable that this somatic visceral-disease mimicry could very well account for the “cures” of presumed organ disease that have been observed over the years in response to various somatic therapies (e.g., spinal manipulation, acupuncture, Rolfing, Qi Gong, etc.) and may represent a common phenomenon that has led to “holistic” health care claims on the part of such clinical disciplines.
Fibromyalgia
Chiropractic has a strong positive history in treating patients who suffer from Fibromyalgia.

https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(06)00178-3/abstract
Conclusion: Methods used in this study [chiropractic manipulation] seemed to be helpful in improving pain intensity, complaints of nonrestorative sleep, and impact on functional activities in patients with FM.
Gastroesophageal Reflux
I have had many patients tell me that their digestive issues improved with chiropractic. In fact, my very first chiropractic patient-reported this very phenomenon.

Conclusion: We reported the successful chiropractic care of a 3-month old female with subjective complaints consistent with GERD in addition to fuss-cry-irritability with sleep disorder syndrome and irritable infant syndrome of musculoskeletal origin. This study suggests the possibility that similar patients may benefit from chiropractic care.
Headache
Chiropractic has been known for eons to help with headaches.

https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754%2811%2900068-6/fulltext
Conclusion: Evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches. The type, frequency, dosage, and duration of treatment(s) should be based on guideline recommendations, clinical experience, and findings. Evidence for the use of spinal manipulation as an isolated intervention for patients with tension-type headaches remains equivocal.
Immune Function
More and more research is surfacing showing how chiropractic boosts the immune system. Other research shows people under regular chiropractic care get sick less often and stay sick for less time than those who don’t.
Chiropractic and the Neuroimmune Connection
Ari Cohn, D.C.
Conclusion: For many years chiropractors have claimed that spinal adjustments can help improve the overall health of an individual. There is a growing body of scientific research to support this contention.
Infertility
Chiropractic and infertility – this is groundbreaking but no surprise. Chiropractic supports a healthy nervous system and the nervous system controls ovulation.
Resolution of Infertility in a Female Undergoing Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care: Case Report & Review of Literature
Laura Sims DC, Jessica Lee DC
Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research 2008: Aug 6: 1-6
Conclusion: Marked resolution of the patient’s signs and symptoms was obtained concomitant with a reduction in subluxation findings at multiple levels. Further research is called for to evaluate the safety, cost, and effectiveness of chiropractic care in women’s health.
Low Back Pain
This has almost been a double-edged sword. While chiropractic is amazing for low back pain, we seem to get pigeonholed into that is the only thing we can do. As you can see from this site, we can do so much more.

Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Disease
Here are some amazing research on Parkinson’s, MS, and Chiropractic. This study shows that chiropractic may stop the progression of symptoms for both of these awful afflictions.

http://www.erinelster.com/pdfs/jvsr%20ms%20and%20pd%2081.pdf
Conclusion: A causal link between trauma-induced upper cervical injury and disease onset for both MS and PD appears to exist. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of IUCCA protocol may arrest and reverse the progression of both MS and PD.
Radiculopathy
The below research shows 60% of patients with sciatica or radiculopathy showed improvement with chiropractic, even if common medical treatments failed.

https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(10)00211-3/abstract
Conclusion: Sixty percent of patients with sciatica who had failed other medical management benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention. Of 40% left unsatisfied, subsequent surgical intervention confers excellent outcome. Patients with symptomatic LDH failing medical management should consider spinal manipulation followed by surgery if warranted.
Scoliosis
It comes as no surprise that chiropractic can help “straighten you out.” This is one of the focuses of my practice.

J Phys Ther Sci. 2016 (Apr); 28 (4): 1106–1110
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4868195
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that chiropractic techniques can effectively reduce the Cobb angle within as little as 4 weeks. So, we can confirm that the chiropractic techniques were effective for reducing the curvature of idiopathic scoliosis.
Spinal Pain
Below is another strong research article in support of chiropractic for spinal pain, and not just typical spinal pain.

J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1999 (Sep); 22 (7): 458–472
https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(99)70035-7/abstract
Conclusion: Although the treatment of neuropathic pain is difficult, sufficient evidence in the literature demonstrates that the treatment of nociceptive pain should be multimodal and involve spinal manipulation, muscle lengthening/stretching, trigger point therapy, rehabilitation exercises, electrical modalities, a variety of nutritional factors, and mental/emotional support.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
Many patients with TMJ have been helped with chiropractic. Here is some valid evidence.

J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2002 (Jan); 25 (1): 63–70
https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(02)25172-6/abstract
Conclusion: The chiropractic care of a patient with temporomandibular disorder, headaches, and subluxation is described. Clinical issues relevant to the care of patients with this disorder are also discussed.
Vertigo and Balance
The below research article shows there is evidence showing chiropractic helps with vertigo and dizziness. It also states more research is needed.
Manual Therapy With and Without Vestibular Rehabilitation for Cervicogenic Dizziness: A Systematic Review
Reidar P Lystad, Gregory Bell, Martin Bonnevie-Svendsen and Catherine V Carter
Chiropractic & Manual Therapies 2011 (Sep 18)
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26362851
Conclusion: There is moderate evidence to support the use of manual therapy, in particular spinal mobilization and manipulation, for cervicogenic dizziness. The evidence for combining manual therapy and vestibular rehabilitation in the management of cervicogenic dizziness is lacking. Further research to elucidate potential synergistic effects of manual therapy and vestibular rehabilitation is strongly recommended.
Whiplash
It comes as no surprise that chiropractic is the number one go-to health care provider for whiplash. Here is some evidence as to why.
Chiropractic treatment of chronic ‘whiplash’ injuries
Woodward MN1, Cook JC, Gargan MF, Bannister GC.
Injury. 1996 Nov;27(9):643-5
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9039361
Forty-three percent of patients will suffer long-term symptoms following ‘whiplash’ injury, for which no conventional treatment has proven to be effective. A retrospective study was undertaken to determine the effects of chiropractic in a group of 28 patients who had been referred with chronic ‘whiplash’ syndrome. The severity of the patient's symptoms was assessed before and after treatment using the Gargan and Bannister (1990) classification. Twenty-six (93 per cent) patients improved following chiropractic treatment (U = 34, P < 0.001). The encouraging results from this retrospective study merit the instigation of a prospective randomized controlled trial to compare conventional with chiropractic treatment in chronic ‘whiplash’ injury.
