Osteoporosis & Bone Health in Snohomish
Osteoporosis is a serious condition that weakens bones. If left untreated, it can lead to broken bones in the hips, legs wrists, or even the spine. In fact, osteoporosis is an interesting problem because there are usually no symptoms until you have a broken bone. This common disease tends to affect women in their senior years. But can really affect anyone as you age. In fact, this disease is so common that about half of women over 50 will suffer from a broken bone due to osteoporosis. Washington Osteoporosis Coalition is responsible for this information.

So how do doctors treat Osteoporosis? The common medical approach involves medication. These drugs are called bisphosphonates. And of course, Fosamax is the most popular one. But the FDA is now questioning the use of these drugs. Why? Because long-term use of these drugs leads to broken bones. But isn’t that what the medication is trying to stop? This information comes from the New England Journal of Medicine published in 2012. Meanwhile, the natural approach tends to emphasize calcium and vitamin D to support healthy bone formation. In fact, even the Merck Manual recommends vitamin D and calcium. See how a Snohomish chiropractor can help.
Problems with the common “Wisdom”
However, there are several problems with this. Did you know the liver is responsible for converting vitamin D to its active form? So liver health may also play a key role. Additionally, vitamin D is only a co-enzyme. This means it can’t do its job without enzymes.
But what’s wrong with calcium? Did you know that women who take calcium supplements are five times more likely to suffer from dementia? There is also an increased risk of cancer. Incidentally, neither of these are a problem if you eat foods rich in calcium. Additionally, there are many systems in the body that require calcium. So just taking calcium doesn’t guarantee it will actually get to the bone. But that’s not all. There are also other parts of your body that can actually stop your bones from using calcium. Sadly, heartburn medications like Prevacid and Nexium also cause bone loss. Lastly, protein is responsible for carrying calcium to the bone. So if you can’t digest, absorb, or use protein properly, calcium probably can’t help you. Or maybe your not eating enough protein.
Our Approach to Healthy Calcium Use
While I don’t diagnose or treat diseases (including osteoporosis), I can support healthy calcium use by your bones. I accomplish this through detailed scientific testing based on sound medical principles. My goal is to find and address the actual source of stress wherever it exists. In some cases, it might be protein digestion or absorption. In other cases, it’s protein use. Perhaps some other part of your body may be robbing calcium from the bone. Wherever the stress is I will use a careful combination of dietary changes and enzyme supplements to help your body work right.
Are you concerned about healthy calcium use? Are you worried about weak bones? If so, give us a call and set up a consultation. I will personally sit down with you and talk about your suffering and how it affects your life. I will even do some preliminary testing as well as Bio Impedance Analysis, which is trusted by both NASA and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. This will help determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you’re not, we’ll make every effort to provide the proper referral.
